Sehr geehrter Herr Bundespräsident Frank-Walter Steinmeier,
sehr geehrte Frau Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel,

American Friends Service Committee:
Dear Guenter,
Congress is again seeking to restrict Americans’ right to support nonviolent boycott actions, and we need your help to stop this from happening.
On Saturday, March 3, an amended version of the “Israel Anti-Boycott Act” (S.720) was released. Although it no longer threatens individuals with criminal prosecution, it would still make it illegal for “domestic concerns” to support international organizations’ calls to boycott Israel—or face a $1 million fine.
Contact your senators today to tell them to oppose the Israel Anti-Boycott Act.
The revised bill has been issued as AIPAC supporters convene in Washington D.C., and we expect they will push this bill during their congressional visits - which is why your voice is needed to counter their efforts today.
The Israel Anti-Boycott Act would violate our First Amendment rights by threatening to prosecute or penalize nonprofit organizations, corporations, and other entities for their political viewpoints about Israel and its policies. This would include AFSC and many others using nonviolent action to call for an end to the occupation.
The revised law itself explicitly states that it was developed in response to the U.N. Human Rights Council’s move to develop a list of companies complicit in violations of international law because of their ties to illegal Israeli settlements. AFSC provided information to the U.N. to create that list--an action that would be considered illegal if this dangerous measure is passed.
Dozens of churches and other groups in the U.S. that support boycotts of companies on the U.N. list could also find themselves at risk of fines under the revised law.
Take action today to oppose the Israel Anti-Boycott Act.
The Israel Anti-Boycott Act is part of a growing effort to outlaw BDS. Since 2014, dozens of anti-BDS measures have been introduced in states across the U.S., and 19 states have enacted anti-BDS laws. Congress is also considering a second bill, S 170 otherwise known as the "Combating BDS Act," that would encourage states to pass legislation targeting individuals and businesses that support boycotts and divestment.
Regardless of your personal position regarding the use of boycott, divestment, and sanctions tactics in the context of Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory, we ask you to act now to protect our First Amendment right to free speech and our right to engage in peaceful efforts to change policies.
Contact your senators and representative today to tell them to oppose the Israel Anti-Boycott Act.
In peace,
